![]() He discovers this after accidentally spilling a cup of hot cocoa on the shirt of a hunky UPS man. In this story Barney, one of Santa’s elves, is not only optimistically chirpy and cheerful, but he’s gay. ![]() Renaud and Schmidt’s warmhearted but slightly raunchy script (this isn’t a children’s show) is an adult parody of the popular Will Ferrell movie, “Elf.” It’s also one more reminder that tormenting and persecuting others, simply because they’re different than you, is absolutely unacceptable. Through their help he learns not only accept who he is but how to overcome an intolerant world of injustice and narrow-mindedness. In this new play with music, written by Bryan Renaud and Emily Schmidt, Barney is an elf who’s aided by his true friends. But at Christmas, a time devoted to Peace on Earth and Good Will to Men, it seems particularly like a sacrilege. Bigotry, bullying and just plain being mean and nasty to others is an unfortunate universal epidemic that should be despised any time of year. ![]() While this story and its over-the-top characters primarily appeal to the LGBTQ segment of the population, the play’s theme speaks to everyone. ![]() ![]() He can’t shake his funk, until his brilliant dad decides it’s time to turn him into– wait for it - a pizza! And hey, that’s just the kind of art that a patriot should create. Really, Revere’s massacre engraving has a quaint, folksy aesthetic. For example, The Bloody Massacre has several problems with linear perspective (look at the orthogonal lines of the buildings) and disproportionate figures. 2 I think this lack of artistic passion separates the quality of Revere’s engravings from his beautiful silver work. ![]() It appears that Revere wasn’t too passionate about engraving he mostly used the medium for political propaganda. My final thoughts on Revere as an artist? I think he was a fantastic silversmith, but his engravings are just alright. This creates some interesting temporal disjunctions and Möbius strips in the narrative, as the point of view shifts from the as-it-happens journal to after-the-fact asides and reflection. There's a bit of a narrative conceit going on as, in the "Introduction," Flannery explains that the writings to follow are her journal that she kept as the events of the book unfolded, which she is now editing after the fact. The title refers to a clique of eight upper-middle class high school students, and the story is told from the point of view of one of them: Flannery Culp, a teenage girl with seemingly normal teenage-girl hangups, who (and this is not really a spoiler) becomes obsessed with a boy and eventually murders him.
